Description

These materials are valuable in showing that the Takeo area introduced advanced Western science and technology through Nagasaki, which played an important role in the modernization of Saga Domain and eventually the whole of Japan. There are a total of 2,224 items, including documents, books, maps, and equipment. During the late Edo Period, Saga Domain, which was in charge of guarding Nagasaki, the only window to the West, felt a sense of peril in response to the successive arrival of ships from Western countries other than the Dutch, who were allowed in Nagasaki. Nabeshima Shigeyoshi, a vassal of Saga Domain and lord of Takeo, had his vassals learn about Western artillery in Nagasaki, and later studied it himself. Through Dutch contacts, he also collected rare items and various texts on the most current knowlede from the West, and used them to conduct research. The results of Takeo's research were brought to Saga Domain. Eventually, Saga Domain would have a major impact on the modernization of Japan, but it was the advanced research conducted in Takeo that provided the impetus for this. All of these materials are now kept at the Takeo City Library and Historical Museum and are made available to the public on a regular basis.
